Review – Rowdytown III at Red Rocks w/ Big Gigantic

This past weekend marked the third consecutive year that Colorado natives Big Gigantic (Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salkin) have brought their live performance to the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater and the third consecutive year that they have completely outdone themselves.

Each year before catching Rowdytown, I ask myself “How on Earth can they possibly top last year’s performance?!” Well, the Big G boys went out and did it again. Whether it was two nights of craziness, the lineup of great openers (including The New Deal, The Floozies, and SAVOY) or their unique projection mapping visual effects on the rocks themselves, the overall production was incredible.

But when it was all said and done, it was Big Gigantic who stole the show and proved why they are one of the hottest acts in the game right now. The fellas had plenty of tricks up their sleeves, including bringing funk band The Motet out for a special live set, a surprise appearance by GRiZ, or the equally surprising encore set where Dom and Jeremy played a bevvy of songs IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CROWD! But far and away the most amazing aspect of their performance was when they were joined on stage by a full high school marching band. The scene itself was truly magical, as you could see how meaningful the cameo was for both Big G and the young musicians themselves. I think it was the one time in my life that I was truly envious of a high schooler!

Besides the fun tweaks and surprises for the fans, Big G also showcased their slew of different vibes and sounds. Their set had everything from sultry jazz/downtempo, to trap, dubstep and pure funk. While nothing will ever top Rowdytown, you can still catch Big Gigantic in all of their glory this fall as they embark on a new tour. Whether you’ve seen them 100 times or have yet to catch the true live spectacle that is Big Gigantic, be sure to get your tickets fast because all these dates are sure to sell out!
